Research Focus
Interdisciplinary research at the intersection of biomedical engineering, nanotechnology and life and health applications, including:
- Biomedical detection and biomarker analysis;
- Targeted drug delivery and precision therapy;
- Micro- and nanobiotechnology and the development of biomimetic materials;
- Early cancer detection and precision treatment technologies;
- Biomolecular analysis and clinical translation applications.
Programme Structure and Funding
This is a full-time PhD programme with a duration of 3–5 years, recruiting only 1–2 students.
Outstanding applicants with relevant laboratory experience and skills may receive full scholarship support. The specific amount is subject to the professor’s final funding offer. For applicants lacking a research background, scholarship funding will be assessed by the supervisor based on overall performance.
Entry Requirements

Tuition and Living Costs
- Tuition: tuition $13,565/semester + fees $1,320/semester = $14,885/semester, totalling $29,770/year (tuition rises slightly each year).
- Living costs: books $1,000 + housing and meals $20,179 + transport $450 + personal $750 = $22,379/year. Total approximately RMB 150,000/year (depending on individual circumstances).
Career Prospects
PhD graduates in biomedical engineering from Binghamton University possess interdisciplinary research and translation capabilities, with career paths spanning academia, industry, government and consulting. Overall salary levels in this field are high owing to the high technical threshold and R&D leadership, and grow steadily with experience, though specific figures vary considerably by industry and region.
In terms of career choices, PhD graduates mainly move into the following areas:
-
Academia: graduates mostly enter top universities or research institutions for postdoctoral research, or apply for faculty positions. Some alumni serve as heads of independent laboratories at institutions such as Boston University and Cornell University, leading frontier projects; some graduates choose to remain at Binghamton University in teaching or research support roles, combining academic continuity with teaching practice.
-
Industry: large medical technology and pharmaceutical companies are the main destination, such as Medtronic, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer and Regeneron, with roles including R&D scientists, product development engineers, and quality and clinical specialists. At the same time, start-ups offer PhDs flexible positions as technical leads or R&D managers, suitable for graduates seeking rapid innovation.
-
Government and regulatory agencies: some graduates join the FDA as researchers or ORISE Fellows, while other alumni hold positions at OSHA, the CDC and the Patent and Trademark Office, working in science policy, technology assessment and regulatory affairs, applying their expertise to public health and regulation.
-
Consulting and technical services: the technical consulting field that has emerged in recent years has attracted many graduates, for example joining companies such as Exponent to provide advisory services to medical device and pharmaceutical companies in FDA compliance, failure analysis and standard testing.
Such roles require PhDs to combine technical depth with business communication skills, translating research outcomes into practical solutions.
