Research Focus

The intersection of biomedical engineering and advanced biomanufacturing, including:

  • Bioprinting and tissue engineering technologies;
  • Biomaterials and tissue regeneration;
  • Organ-on-a-chip and disease model construction;
  • Microfluidics and biomedical applications;
  • Biomedical devices and miniaturisation technologies;
  • Applications of advanced manufacturing technologies in the biomedical field.

Programme Structure and Funding

This programme is a joint PhD programme between the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and Rutgers University. Applicants submit their applications to NJIT; upon enrolment, they register in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at NJIT, and on graduation receive a joint diploma from NJIT and Rutgers. NJIT and Rutgers University are geographically close, giving students convenient access to courses, laboratories, libraries and academic seminars at both institutions, while combining educational and research opportunities in the scientific and clinical fields. In addition, both institutions are located in Newark, which facilitates students’ exchange and interaction with New Jersey’s pharmaceutical industry, medical device industry and medical institutions. In terms of training, applicants may choose to take part of their course credits at Rutgers University.

This programme is a full-time PhD programme with a duration of 4–5 years, and admits only 1–2 students.

Applicants may receive scholarship support. The specific amount depends on factors such as the applicant’s background, the academic department and the supervisor’s research funding. Scholarships are usually awarded in the form of tuition remission, living stipends, TA, RA, Grader and so on.

Entry Requirements

Biomedical engineering, bioengineering, mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering, chemical engineering, basic medical sciences, biology, chemistry, physics, applied mathematics.

  • Academic background: a bachelor’s/master’s degree in engineering, basic sciences or mathematics. The following course background is usually required: mathematics courses from calculus through to differential equations; a full academic year of physics; a full academic year of chemistry; one physiology course. Applicants with a life sciences or medical education background who have the same physics, chemistry, mathematics and physiology course background may be reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis.
  • Grade requirements: GPA ≥ 3.5.
  • Language requirements: TOEFL: 4.0 (new scale) or 79/550 (old scale); or IELTS: 6.5 (with no sub-score below 6.0); Applicants who have obtained a degree in an English-taught country may apply for an exemption.
  • References: 3 letters of recommendation.

Application Materials

  • Degree certificate;
  • Transcripts;
  • GRE/GMAT scores (GRE: Quantitative Reasoning ≥ 157);
  • English test score report;
  • 3 letters of recommendation;
  • Statement of purpose.

Application Period

Intakes in spring and autumn, with rolling admissions; international students are advised to begin their applications 6 months in advance.

  • Autumn intake: deadline 15 December;
  • Spring intake: deadline 15 October.

Application Process

From now until the end of October, applicants submit an English CV and relevant materials, and we will conduct a preliminary assessment. In November, those who pass the initial screening will be invited to interview with potential supervisors. Before mid-December, those who pass the interview must formally submit their application materials through the official website. In January, shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by the college admissions committee. In February–March, admission offers are issued. Note: the timing above uses the autumn intake as an example.

Autumn: 15 December; Spring: 15 October.

Tuition and Living Costs

Living Costs

Approximately $18,900/year (depending on individual circumstances).

  • Tuition: $42,534 tuition and fees + $9,978 other costs (including insurance, books, etc.), totalling approximately $52,512/year (tuition rises slightly each year).

Career Prospects

The PhD programme in Biomedical Engineering at the New Jersey Institute of Technology trains high-level talent for frontier fields such as biomaterials, tissue engineering, neural engineering, medical imaging and biomechanics. Graduates’ career development shows a trend towards diversification, high technical content, and equal emphasis on academia and industry.

Regarding salaries, data from NJIT’s official website show that graduates in biomedical engineering have an average starting salary of approximately $68,000, with an average mid-career salary of approximately $80,800; PhD graduates, with a higher level of research and professional capability, are overall more competitive in salary. In terms of career choices, PhD graduates mainly move into the following areas:

  • Academia and research institutes: some PhD graduates take up faculty positions or undertake postdoctoral research at domestic and international universities, research institutions and medical research institutions, carrying out teaching and frontier research in biomedical engineering and related fields.

  • Biopharmaceutical and medical technology companies: most PhD graduates choose to enter industries such as medical devices, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and healthcare, taking up core technical positions such as R&D scientists and biomedical engineers, and engaging in product development and technological innovation.

  • Medical institutions and research development: some graduates enter hospitals, medical institutions and government research departments, engaging in clinical engineering, medical imaging, biomedical R&D and other work, and may also continue their research training or move into related fields such as technical management.
