Career Prospects

Against the backdrop of intertwined global climate change, environmental pollution and public health crises, there is an urgent societal need for environmental health and risk management professionals. PhD graduates from the University of Birmingham in this field have extremely broad career prospects and highly competitive salaries.

With experience, graduates can easily earn over £70,000 per year in senior research, management or consultancy roles, with some top talent earning even more. In terms of career choices, PhD graduates mainly move into the following areas:

  • Academia and high-level research institutions: this is one of the core destinations for PhD graduates.

Graduates can join universities or research institutions around the world (such as the Met Office Hadley Centre, Rothamsted Research, etc.) as postdoctoral researchers, lecturers or assistant professors. They devote themselves to research on frontier topics, such as the human health effects of environmental pollutants, climate change adaptive risk assessment, and transmission models for novel pathogens.

  • Government agencies and public policy departments: graduates can work in national-level institutions such as the Environment Agency and Public Health England, or in local government public health and urban planning departments, as senior environmental health advisers, risk assessment managers or policy analysts.

  • Enterprises and private consultancies: large companies (especially in energy, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food and manufacturing) urgently need in-house experts to manage their environmental and health risks, ensure compliance and improve sustainability.

As senior consultants, they provide clients with high-value services such as environmental audits, occupational health assessments, contaminated site remediation and climate change resilience planning.

  • International organisations and NGOs: graduates who wish to play a role at the global level can choose to join international organisations such as the World Health Organization, the United Nations Environment Programme and the World Bank.

On these platforms, they participate in formulating global environmental and health strategies, assisting developing countries in addressing related challenges, and coordinating cross-border risk management projects; their careers offer an extremely high level of international perspective and social influence.
