Career Prospects

As a member of the Russell Group, the University of Birmingham’s quantitative finance PhD programme is known for its rigorous academic standards and close industry links. PhD graduates are highly sought after by top institutions for their deep mathematical modelling, programming and independent research abilities.

Their starting salaries are generally higher than those of other finance graduates; in financial centres such as London, starting salaries for recent PhD graduates are typically between £70,000 and £120,000, and senior professionals can earn several hundred thousand pounds or more per year. In terms of career choices, PhD graduates mainly move into the following areas:

  • Academia and regulatory bodies: some graduates choose to enter universities to continue research and teaching.

Others enter central banks or financial regulatory institutions, undertaking key work such as financial stability, policy modelling and systemic risk monitoring.

  • Investment banking and proprietary trading: mainly working in quantitative analysis, derivatives pricing or risk management departments at top global investment banks, or joining well-known proprietary trading firms/hedge funds, engaged in high-frequency trading, algorithmic strategy development and systematic investment research.

  • Fintech and technology giants: responsible for core algorithm development such as credit models and risk pricing engines at fast-growing fintech companies. At the same time, the financial business divisions of large technology companies also provide them with a broad platform.

  • Asset management companies: serving buy-side institutions, using professional skills for factor model development and alternative data analysis to build and backtest innovative investment strategies and directly create investment value.
