Career Prospects
Ph.D. in Bioengineering, Imperial Polytechnic University, is highly competitive in the job market, based on cutting-edge and cross-disciplinary background and strong scientific capabilities. The overall career path is diverse and initial pay is attractive.
According to recent years’ data, doctoral graduates are usually paid between 45,000 and 65,000 per annum, and senior researchers, industry senior scientists or strategic advisers are paid more than 80,000 per annum, depending on their field, geography and personal experience. In terms of career choices, doctoral graduates mainly go to the following areas:
-
Academia and scientific research: Graduates can enter the world ’ s top institutions of higher learning or research for postdoctoral research and eventually move towards independent chief scientist (PI), leading front-line basic or transformational medicine projects.
-
Biomedicine and pharmaceutical industry: In pharmaceutical enterprises (e.g. GSK, Aslicon) or biotechnology companies, the development of new medicines, biotechnologies, medical equipment design and assessment are key agents in moving products from laboratory to clinical. - Medical technology and equipment: special attention is given to research and development, regulatory matters or clinical support in areas such as high-end medical images, surgical robots, implantable equipment, diagnostic instruments, etc., to apply engineering innovations to practical clinical problems.
-
Biotechnology Entrepreneurship: Using cutting-edge technologies (e.g. synthetic biology, AI assistive design) that come into contact with imperial science, many graduates choose to start up or join start-up companies to commercialize original technologies. - Counselling and investment: professional analysis of technical assessments, market strategies and investment decisions for health, biotech companies in institutions such as McKinsey, Boston, etc., or in life sciences.
