Research Focus

Biomedical engineering intersects with advanced biomanufacturing, including:

  • Bioprinting and tissue engineering;
  • Biological materials and tissue regeneration;
  • Organ chips and disease modelling;
  • Microflow control technology and biomedical applications;
  • Biomedical devices and miniaturization techniques;
  • Application of advanced manufacturing technologies in biomedical fields.

Programme Structure and Funding

The project is a joint doctoral programme of the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and Rutgers University. The applicant submitted an application to NJIT, registered in the Department of Biomedicine Engineering of NJIT and graduated with a joint NJIT and Rutgers diploma (joint diploma). The NJIT, in close proximity to the geographical location of two institutions of higher education at the University of Rutgers, facilitates students ’ access to courses, laboratories, libraries and academic seminars in both schools, combining science with education and scientific research opportunities in the clinical field. In addition, both schools are located in Newark, which facilitates the exchange and interaction of students with the New Jersey pharmaceutical industry, the medical equipment industry and medical institutions. In the area of training, applicants have the option of taking part in the course at the University of Rutgers.

The project is a full-time Ph.D. programme, with only 1-2 students enrolled in 4-5 years.

Applicants can receive scholarship support. The amount depends on the applicant’s background, the academic sector and the funding of the mentor ’ s research. Scholarships are usually awarded in the form of tuition deductions, subsistence allowance, TA, RA, Grader etc.

Suitable Academic Backgrounds

Biomedical engineering, bioengineering, mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering, chemical engineering, basic medicine, biology, chemistry, physics, applied mathematics

Entry Requirements

  • Academic background: BA/MA in Engineering, Basic Science or Mathematics. The following curriculum background is usually required: mathematics from calculus to calculus equation; physics for a full school year; chemistry for a full school year; and physiology for a full year. Life sciences or medical educational background, with the same physiology, chemistry, mathematics and physiology curriculum, may be individually examined on a case-by-case basis.
  • Performance requirements: GPA 3.5.
  • Language requirements: TOEFL: 4.0 (new standard) or 79/ 550 (old standard); or IELTS: 6.5 (no component below 6.0); Exemptions are available for national degrees in English.

  • A letter of recommendation 3;
  • Statement of purpose.

Application Period

Enrolment in the spring and autumn seasons, rolling admission, is recommended for international students to start applying 6 months in advance.

  • Autumn enrolment deadline: 12 month 15
  • Spring enrolment: 10 month 15 deadline.

Application Process

Up to the end of the month of 10 for applicants to submit their English curriculum vitae and related materials, we will conduct a preliminary assessment of the first screening month 11 and will invite potential mentors to interview 12 mid-month, and will be required to formally present the application 1 for short-listed candidates through the network of officials, and the College Admission Board will organize an interview 2-3 for the month 2-3: the process node above will take the example of the fall entrance.

Autumn: 12 15; spring: 10 15.

Tuition and Living Costs

Living costs

About $ 18,900/ year (depending on individual circumstances).

  • Tuition fees: It’s okay.42,534Tuition and miscellaneous fees + $9,978Other costs (including insurance, books, etc.) totalling approximately $52,512/ Year (slight annual increase).

Career Prospects

The Ph.D. Biomedicine Engineering Project of the New Jersey Polytechnic Institute is aimed at developing high-level talent in the frontier areas of biological materials, organizational engineering, neuroengineering, medical imaging and biomechanicals. The career development of graduates is characterized by a trend towards diversification, high-skilled, academic and industrial cumulation.

With regard to salaries, NJIT Network data show that graduates in biomedicine engineering receive on average about US$ 68,000 and in medium-term occupations about US$ 80,800 and that doctoral graduates are more competitive on the basis of higher levels of scientific and professional competence. In terms of career choices, doctoral graduates mainly go to the following areas:

  • Academia and scientific research institutes: Some Ph.D. graduates are enrolled in higher education, research and medical research institutions at home and abroad in teaching positions or in postdoctoral research, in the teaching of biomedical engineering and related fields and in forward research.

  • Biomedicine and Medical Science and Technology Enterprises: Most doctoral graduates have chosen to enter the fields of medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, biotechnologies and medical health, to serve in core technical posts such as research and development scientists, biomedical engineers, and to work in product development and technological innovation. - Development of medical institutions and research: Some graduates enter hospitals, medical institutions and government scientific departments, work in the areas of clinical engineering, medical imagery, biomedical research and development, and can continue their research studies or access relevant areas of technical management.
