Career Prospects
Ph.D. in the direction of cell biology and genetics, TUM is highly competitive in the job market because of its solid experimental skills, rigorous scientific thinking and interdisciplinary cooperation. Its main development paths can be grouped into the following broad categories:
Academia & scientific field
Post-doctoral studies: Graduates are generally enrolled in the Maps of Germany (MPG), the Hemhods Federation (HZ), the Lebnitz Institute or continue their post-doctoral studies at the world ’ s top schools in Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge, United Kingdom. Independent Team Leader (PI): After the postdoctoral phase, the ultimate goal is to become independent researchers, lead their own laboratories, seek third-party funding and prepare the next generation of scientists. Expert in core facilities: Technical director of a core facility at a university or research institute, with a mastery of cutting-edge technologies (e.g., refrigerated mirrors, bioimage, bioinformatics).
Industry & Medicine
R&D: Access to the core of research and development in Bayer, Roche, Pfizer, Novatis, BioNTech, etc. Medical services and scientific liaison: as a bridge between science and clinical communication, responsible for interpreting and communicating the latest scientific results and supporting the medical strategy of the product. Biotechnology start-ups: Munich is one of the most active start-ups in Europe. Many graduates join or directly establish biotech companies to convert academic ideasa into practical applications or products.
Clinical and medical orientation
Hospital Research Laboratory: In collaboration with university-affiliated hospitals (e.g., rechts der Isar Hospital), carry out transformational medical research and direct basic research findings to clinical applications. Genetic counselling/diagnosis: Access to medical diagnostic institutions, responsible for the analysis and interpretation of genetic data based on techniques such as NGS.
Advice and finance
Management consulting: Joining top consulting firms such as McKinsey, Boston Consulting (BCG) and Bain, focusing on strategic advice in the field of medicine, healthcare. Risk Investment (VC) and Equity Investment (PE): become an investment analyst in life sciences to assess the scientific feasibility and investment potential of biotechnology projects.
