Research Focus

  • The relationship between biodiversity, ecosystem health and environmental change, with particular attention to the impacts of climate change on ecosystem functions and species interactions;
  • (b) The role of species migration, changes in community structure and changes in ecosystem services in the context of global change;
  • Interdisciplinary studies of ecology and biology, combining areas such as population ecology, plant-animal interaction and ecological process modelling, to understand how environmental change affects ecosystems and biodiversity;
  • Development of eco-protection strategies to respond to global change through field surveys and laboratory analysis, combining large data and environmental monitoring techniques.

Career Prospects

The University of Nottingham ’ s Ph.D. in Biosciences is highly competitive in the job market, with its top scientific training, critical thinking skills and expertise. Overall, the career paths of graduates tend to be diversified, mainly in academia, industry and government and public utilities.

In terms of salaries, there are significant differences between the starting areas and the type of post. Generally speaking, post-doctoral researchers entering academia usually receive a start-up salary that follows the UKRI standard (approximately 35,000 GBP s sterling); enter research and development positions in industry (e.g., pharmaceutical, biotechnology companies) and are more attractive, with salaries generally above 40,000 and senior scientists above 60,000; and enter government agencies or not-for-profit organizations with relatively middle salaries.

In terms of career choices, doctoral graduates mainly go to the following areas:

  • Academic research: Graduates usually start with postdoctoral researchers and continue to deepen their research at universities or research institutes with the goal of becoming independent researchers, lecturers and even professors. In addition, they may act as managers or technical experts at core research facilities.

  • Industry and Industrial Research and Development: This is one of the main destinations for doctoral graduates. The world ’ s leading pharmaceutical companies (e.g. AstraZeneca), biotechnology enterprises, agricultural science and technology or the food industry can be involved in drug discovery, technology development, data analysis, etc.

Positions include scientists, research and development commissioners, project managers, etc. - Government and public institutions: Graduates have access to the UK Health and Safety Agency, UNEP, Natural History Museum, etc., as science policy advisers, regulatory scientists or researchers responsible for policy development and assessment in the areas of public health, environmental protection and food safety.

  • Other areas of specialization: With excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, many graduates have also successfully crossed borders. For example, entering consulting firms as advisers in the field of life sciences, as patent agents at patent law firms, or in the scientific publishing and media industries, as journal editors and scientific writers.
